Hindrance 3: Trusting doctors more than
God

Luke 8:43 "And a woman was there who had been subject to
bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her." NIV
A certain woman in Jesus' days had a mysterious disease. She
went to every doctor possible. None of them were able to
help her. She did this for 12 years without any success.
When she heard about Jesus and His healing power, she
realized that He was the only One who could heal her. Luke
8:44 "She came up behind him and touched the edge of his
cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped." NIV
Who healed her? The tunic? No. Jesus did.
What healed her? Luke 8:48 "Daughter, your faith has healed
you. Go in peace." NIV Her faith.
It's ironic that when we have problems, we always try first
to solve them ourselves. When everything fails, we then go
to Jesus. Is this showing faith in our Lord? Shouldn't this
be the other way around? Trusting Jesus first?
There is nothing wrong to go see doctors for healing.
Healing is a gift from God. 1 Cor 12:28 "…also those having
gifts of healing" NIV And God uses doctors to heal people.
What is wrong is to not trust God in our healing process.
The following incident shows what happens when we do not
rely on God and only rely on other humans for healing.
2 Chron 16:12-13 "In the thirty-ninth year of his reign Asa
was afflicted with a disease in his feet. Though his disease
was severe, even in his illness he did not seek help from
the LORD, but only from the physicians." NIV
Asa did not show much faith in God, did he? He had more
faith in his physicians. What good did it to him? Jer 17:5
"This is what the LORD says: "Cursed is the one who trusts
in man, who depends on flesh for his strength and whose
heart turns away from the LORD." NIV
Doctors are important. Luke, a follower of Christ who wrote
the gospel of Luke was a physician. However to not depend on
God is to ask for disaster, because ultimately all healing
belongs to God. King Asa was guilty of exalting physicians
above God and this prevented him to receive his healing.
Your life may revolve with an inordinate preoccupation with
physicians. Your major conversation may be based around
diseases, prescriptions and treatments. But will all these
make you better? No. May I encourage you to while receiving
treatment from doctors, to keep your focus on the promises
of God. You can trust Him my friend.
