If a person breaks one of the Ten Commandments can he or
she still get through the doors of heaven?
If this were to
be the case, none of us would be saved, as the Bible clearly
says: Rom 3: 23 “For all have sinned and fall short of the
glory of God.” I haven’t yet met one person who did not
break God’s law, except Jesus Christ. If we can only
be saved by keeping the law, we are doomed, as it is clearly
written: Rom 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death.” We
all deserve hell. We are all sinners, and none of us
are bringing glory to God.
the role of the law, then?
“Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by
observing the law; rather, through the law we become
conscious of sin.” NIV
apostle Paul underlines the importance that none of us can
be declared righteous by our works. Salvation by works
does not work! The law makes us conscious that we are
sinners, and that we are not as “good” as we pretend to be.
Does this mean
we are all doomed to hell? No, not at all. John 3:16
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only
Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have
eternal life.” NIV Salvation is offered by God
through His son Jesus Christ. His son died in our
stead, so that we could be reconciled with God. He was
resurrected, assuring us of our eternal salvation. All
you need to do is believe in Jesus and His offer to you.
Eph 2:8-9 “For
it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this
not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- not by works, so
that no one can boast.” NIV
If you try to
add works to be saved, you do not know Jesus and you are
telling Him that His sacrifice was for nothing!
Now let us go
back and look at the context of Rom 3:23 and Rom 6:23,
and watch the beauty of God’s grace.
Rom 3:21-24 “But
now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made
known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22
This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus
Christ to all who believe. There is no difference,
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
24 and are justified freely by his grace through the
redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” NIV
Yes, we are all
sinners, and we have all broken the law of God, however we
can be saved if we only believe in Jesus and in God’s grace
offered “freely” (not by works, nor by money) through the
supreme sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. Wow!
That is real love!
Rom 6:23 “For
the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal
life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” NIV
Yes, we do
deserve death, as we have all transgressed God’s law, but
God made it possible for us to obtain eternal life through
His son Jesus Christ.
So, to answer
the Bible question of the week: yes, we can be saved if we
break one of God’s commandments. If not, Jesus would
have died in vain.
Does this mean I
can continue in my sin, once I accept Jesus? Not at
all! Rom 3:31 “Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith?
Not at all! Rather, we uphold the law.” NIV
Have you committed some horrible deeds towards others or
towards God? Don’t ever think your actions are
unforgivable. Are you tired of leading a miserable
life of sin? Come to Jesus and let Him break your
bonds to sin. He will set you free and will forgive
you, welcoming with open arms to God’s family. Why
don’t you accept Him now in your life? Come to
invite Him into your life.
This is an interesting question that I believe is coming
from a sincere heart that would like to know the Truth.
Let me state here that the ten commandments as contained in
Exodus 20 and a few other chapters in the Old Testament
given to Moses by God to the Israelite is not sufficient for
today. This is because Jesus Christ has come to release
grace unto us. We are therefore saved by this grace and not
by work, lest anyone should boast. The Israelites at that
time needed a rule by which they would be guided. Today,
Jesus has come into the world to shed His precious blood for
the remission of the sins of mankind. This blood cleanses as
many as would receive Him into his heart.
"For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ
died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will
one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare
to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that
while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more
then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be
saved form wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies we
were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much
more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.
And not only that, but we also rejoice on God through our
Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the
Reconciliation with Christ was made possible by the shedding
of His precious blood.
THE GUIDING PRINCIPLES TO ETERNITY
The Pharisees and Sadducees in their religious way wanted
some clarification concerning the commandment under
discussion and they wanted an answer from Jesus. Let us see
the disposition of Jesus towards the question.
But when the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the
Sadducees, they gathered together. Then one of them, a
lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying,
"Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?" Jesus
said to him, "You shall love the LORD you God with all your
heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. "This the
first and great commandment. "And the second is like it:
'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' "On these two
commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets."
I trust you would appreciate the answer of Jesus for your
question and follow His word.
"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another;
as I have loved you, that you also love one another. "By
this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have
love for one another."
Can you see that? This transcends beyond keeping all or part
of the commandments. We are in the dispensation of grace and
therefore not guided by set of rules. All of the above when
carefully fulfilled in the Spirit of Christianity having
been born again will guarantee heaven. Please not that pure
love is quite different from lust. When you love, you love
not because of what you will get but because Jesus has dealt
well with your sinful nature and the love that would flow
from you is what is called AGAPE - God's kind of love. See I
Corinthians Chapter 13
END OF ALL COMMANDMENT
I Tim 1:5
Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure
heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith,
The situation of your heart is very important to God. God is
not interested about your scoring 100? or 99.9 of the ten
commandment. He is interested in you being a child of God
and living to please Him everyday.
WHERE WOULD YOU SPEND ETERNITY?
When you die today, you are either going to open your eyes
in heaven or hell. Your end would either be spent in heaven
or hell. Death is not your end. It is either a continuation
of life in Christ if you are born again or a continuation
with terrors of hell if you die unsaved. Look at John
You must be born gain and not ruled by commandments.
Yes, however, he or she must repent of whatever sin has
There is only one sin in Scripture that is said to be "unforgiveable",
and that's blasphemy against the Holy Spirit (many believe
this is refusing to accept Jesus even at the last moment)
While a person has every chance to repent and be forgiven
during life, there are no second chances after death:
Matthew 12 32Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man
will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy
Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the
age to come" (NIV).
John the Apostle gives Christians reassurance of the
forgiveness of sins. If you confess your sins sincerely, God
will forgive you. : 1 John 1 "8If we claim to be without
sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9If we
confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive
us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." (NIV)
Here is more assurance of the forgiveness of sins.
Habitual, unrepentant sin can keep a person out of heaven,
but the good news is that you can be forgiven by asking
God's forgiveness. I Corinthians 6 "9Do you not know that
the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be
deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor
adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders
10nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers
nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11And that is
what some of you were. But you were washed, you were
sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus
Christ and by the Spirit of our God." (NIV)
No matter what sins a person may have committed, they can
receive God's gift of forgiveness as long as they're alive.
If you're struggling with unrepentant sin in your life, our
ministry would be glad to pray for you.
Your sister in Christ,
If a person breaks one of the Ten Commandments can he or
she still get through the doors of heaven?
Rom 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of
All of us have broken one or more of the Ten Commandments.
For this reason none of us is eligible to enter heaven;
given that the only way to qualify is to be without sin. We
sin when we break one of the Ten Commandments. The Ten
Commandments are what defines sin for us. It is the law and
there is only one penalty, death.
1Jo 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law:
for sin is the transgression of the law.
Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin [is] death; but the gift of
God [is] eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
This last verse offers hope. It mentions that eternal life
is a gift. That it can be obtained through Jesus Christ. So
how do we get this gift?
Approximately 2000 years ago, a man was born of a virgin. He
was conceived by the Holy Ghost and not a man in the usual
way. Through the miracle of His birth, Jesus was not a
partaker in the inherited sin of all the descendants of our
original father Adam. He was, and is, the eternal Son of
God, who was made flesh for our sakes. Although sorely
tempted, Jesus lived His life without once breaking one of
His Father's Ten Commandments. Jesus voluntarily laid down
His life for us and shed His innocent blood to buy back the
earth and all it's children from God's enemy, Satan, who
came into legal possession through the defection of our
God has offered a free pardon to any sinner who repents and
puts his or her faith in His Son, Jesus, who God resurrected
from the dead. Jesus ministers for us in heaven, covering
the sins of all who believe in Him and make a public witness
of that fact, with His perfection.
There is no other way any of us can get into heaven except
Jhn 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and
the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Act 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there
is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we
must be saved.
Rom 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord
Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised
him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Go in peace and do not neglect to make a decision to put
your trust in Jesus to get you into heaven.
Go in peace.
Absolutely! The scriptures tell us that as long as we
repent in our hearts and are truly sorry and want to walk
away from our sinful ways He will totally forgive us.
Psalms 103:12 tells us As far as the east is from the west,
so far has he removed our transgressions from us.
Hebrews 10:17 says And "I will remember their sins and their
iniquities no more."
Acts 3:19 says "Repent therefore, and turn again, that your
sins may be blotted out"
1 John. 1:7 says "But if we walk in the light as He is in
the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the
blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin."
We also must forgive those who have sinned against us. We
must forgive as the Lord forgives.
John 20:23 says "Whoever’s sins you forgive, they are
forgiven them. Whoever’s sins you retain, they have been
retained." Colossians 3:13 says "Forgive as the Lord forgave
Matthew 18:35 says "So my heavenly Father will also do to
you, if you don’t each forgive your brother from your hearts
for his misdeeds."
Matthew 6: 14-15 says "For if you forgive men their
trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
15But if you don’t forgive men their trespasses, neither
will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Mark 11:25-26 says 25Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if
you have anything against anyone; so that your Father, who
is in heaven, may also forgive you your transgressions.
26But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in
heaven forgive your transgressions.
To be saved and get into the gates of Heaven we must Believe
in and trust God. Live for God and Forgive Our Brothers As
He Forgave Us. Bow down before the Lord and repent in our
hearts for our sinful ways. As Jesus told the woman caught
in adultery "go and sin no more.
If not, then Paul changed for nothing. Christ died
for our sins. We all fall short because none of us
are perfect. How about David sending a man to
die so he could possess his wife?
I certainly hope so!! Of course he can, the Bible teaches
that no person can even keep ONE of the Ten Commandments.
Galatians 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to
bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith
The whole purpose of the law was to show us that we are
totally unable to keep any aspect of the law, including the
That was Jesus' point to the rich young ruler when He told
him to go and sell all that he had and come follow Him - the
young man claimed to have keep the Ten Commandments from his
youth and Jesus tested him on the first Commandment "Thou
shalt have no other gods before Me"
Jon and Janice Settlemoir
The answer is no, unless it's out of ignorance. All
throughout the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, we are
admonished to keep all of God's commandments. All ten
commandments are based on our love for God and our love for
men. (the first four, our love for God - the first and
Greatest commandment, the other six - our love for man - the
second greatest commandment). They were all written at the
same time with the finger of God. Obeying the commandments
will not save us; we obey because we are saved.
Here are the Word of the Lord:
For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one
point, he is guilty of all. James 2:10
And I will make your descendants multiply as the stars of
heaven; I will give to your descendants all these lands; and
in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed;
because Abraham obeyed My voice and kept My charge, My
commandments, My statutes, and My laws." Genesis 26:4-6
But if you do not obey Me, and do not observe all these
commandments, and if you despise My statutes, or if your
soul abhors My judgments, so that you do not perform all My
commandments, but break My covenant, I also will do this to
you: I will even appoint terror over you, wasting disease
and fever which shall consume the eyes and cause sorrow of
heart. And you shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies
shall eat it. Leviticus 26:14-16
You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take
from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your
God which I command you. Deut 4:2
And the LORD will make you the head and not the tail; you
shall be above only, and not be beneath, if you heed the
commandments of the LORD your God, which I command you
today, and are careful to observe them. Deut 28:13
The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul; The
testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple;
Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these
commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in
the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he
shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:19
Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may
have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through
the gates into the city. Revelation 22:6,7
Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God,
and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of
man. Ecclesiastes 12:13
My understanding of what God has said in God's Word
regarding this is that indeed, no person can follow all the
commandments all of the time. At some point we are
bound to break one of them. And if we break one of
them, we break all. In fact all human beings are
conceived "in sin", i.e., the breaking of the commandments
begins in the womb itself.
God in God's love for us, has sent Jesus Christ to take on -
in our stead -- the punishment for our breaking of the
commandments. God said whoever believes in Jesus
Christ will have eternal life. It is hard to
understand this, but this is God's grace, a free gift which
we receive through faith.
And so my answer would be yes, even if a person breaks the
commandments, s/he will still be able to be with God and
enter God's glory -- through Christ. That is how much
God cares for us and loves us.
A person who is in Christ responds to God's grace by trying
to keep the commandments and living a life worthy of God's
love. God's Spirit fills the person and when s/he
"falls again" i.e., breaks the commandments again, the
Spirit moves and prompts the person to come to God and seek
forgiveness. And God in God's mercy again extends
forgiveness to the person.
I think that even if one person breaks one or more than
one of the ten commandments of the Bible he/she can still
enter in the gates of heaven. This can be done only if
he/she confesses the sin, repents and ask God for
forgiveness. That does not mean that the Ten Commandments
are no more important in one's life. One person should live
by keeping the ten commandments of God, that is why they
have given for but one can not be saved only by keeping
them. Let us have a look into the life of Jesus: Did he keep
the Commandments including the Commandment about the
Sabbath? The answer is yes, he did. Let us try and follow
His example and the mercy that he gives will help us get

No, if you break one if the 10 commandments, you can not
get to heaven, at least not without someone dying in your
place. Any broken commandment of the 10 (except 1 1/2 of
them) are specifically stated, in other places of the Mosaic
Law, to be punishable by death. The exceptions are
coveting---which leads to breaking one of the other
commandments and stealing by day. The punishment for
stealing by day gives a big clue as to how to get to heaven,
in spite of it all. The thief who steals and is caught in
the act but not killed in the act can have an animal killed
in his stead.
Worse, EVERY sin is punishable by death, as it states in
Romans 6:23. And all have sinned, as it states in Romans
3:23. But reading the rest of Romans 3 reveals interesting
words such as redemption, atonement and justified.
Redemption means to "buy back" or "to pay the ransom for".
Atonement is another word for "cover" or "cancel". Finally,
justified is another way to say "vindicated". Do you see the
common thread throughout my answer? In his stead, buy back,
cancel and vindicated are all talking about getting off the
hook. But how?
Jesus died for you! He could not just be hurt for your sins.
He had to be killed and He had to be sinless or none of us
could get to heaven, because all of us have broken the 10
commandments! At the same time, though, we know that
although Jesus died for all, not all of us are going to
heaven. Furthermore, even the pagan knows something is wrong
if you say you believe in Jesus and keep living a lifestyle
of sin. So, what is the specific thing we must do to have
Jesus' blood work for us so that we do not have to go to the
eternal place of death (Revelation 20:14)?
The Bible says: "For God so loved the world that he gave his
one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not
perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16) It says believe
in. It is better translated as "relies on". Many believe
that you just need to rely on his death in place of your
death. I thought that, but it did not change me or save me.
To believe in Jesus means to trust in who he really is.
Since He is alive and all powerful and all knowledgeable,
then the only true reliance is one of giving yourself wholly
to his care and leading. Anything less is not believing that
Jesus is who He says he is. Anything less and God the Father
will not let Jesus' death count for you!
Are you to the point I got to where I realized I was bad at
running my own life? Won't you let Jesus have control. You
can enter the kingdom of heaven now and arrive in heaven
